How Does EMDR Work?

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy approach primarily used to treat trauma, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), anxiety, and other distressing memories. It was developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR helps people process and integrate traumatic memories by using bilateral stimulation, often in the form of guided eye movements, taps, or sounds, while recalling distressing memories. The process allows the brain to reprocess these memories, reducing their emotional charge and helping individuals integrate them in a healthier way.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?

  • It mimics the brain’s natural healing process (similar to REM sleep).

  • It helps reprocess distressing experiences so they are no longer emotionally overwhelming.

  • It reduces physiological distress related to traumatic memories.
